Privacy Policy — Curio

Curio is built by Steward Technologies Ltd (“we,” “us,” “our”). This policy explains what information the app collects, how it’s used, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, email us at hello@stewardtechnologies.com.

Information We Collect

Photos you scan. When you photograph or select a photo of a plant, fish, rock or mineral, or mushroom, that photo is sent to OpenAI for identification and is also saved to your account so you can revisit your scan history.

Scan results. The specimen name, classification, description, facts, safety flags, and confidence score returned for each scan are saved to your account, along with the date of the scan, which category it belongs to, and whether you’ve marked it a favorite.

Account identifier. The app creates an anonymous account for your device automatically — no name, email, or sign-up is required to use Curio.

Subscription information. If you subscribe, our payments partner (RevenueCat) and the App Store or Play Store process your purchase. We receive subscription status (active, trial, expired) but never your full payment details.

Usage and attribution data. We use Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used, and — where permitted by your device settings — attribution data from Meta and Apple Search Ads to understand which ads led to installs.

How We Use This Information

• To identify plants, fish, rocks and minerals, and mushrooms, and generate relevant facts (via OpenAI)
• To save and display your scan history and favorites across all four categories
• To manage your subscription and free trial
• To understand app usage and improve Curio over time
• To measure the effectiveness of our advertising

We do not sell your information.

Third-Party Services

Curio relies on the following services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

Your name, email, or any other personally identifying information is never sent to OpenAI — only the photo itself.

Safety Note (Mushroom Identification)

Mushroom identification results, including any edibility information, are for general reference only and are not a substitute for expert, in-person verification. Many toxic mushroom species closely resemble edible ones. Never eat a wild mushroom based on this or any app — always confirm with a qualified expert before consuming anything foraged. The same reference-only principle applies to any safety or hazard flag shown for plants, fish, or minerals: always verify independently before handling, touching, or consuming anything based on app results.

Data Retention & Deletion

You can delete any individual scan — photo and record together — at any time from within the app. To limit storage growth, your history is also automatically capped at your 50 most recent scans across all categories combined; older ones are removed automatically once you pass that limit.

Children’s Privacy

Curio is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your data, or to object to certain processing. Contact us at hello@stewardtechnologies.com to exercise any of these rights.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
