1. Introduction
AI Nutrition Label Scanner (“the App”) is developed and operated by Steward Technologies Ltd (“we”, “us”, or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.
By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide
- Email address — only if you choose to create a backup account
- Allergy and dietary profile — restrictions you set (e.g. gluten, dairy, nuts, halal) to personalise scan results
- Ingredients to avoid — any custom ingredient blacklist you create
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Anonymous user ID — a randomly generated identifier assigned on first launch. No name or email is attached unless you choose to create a backup account.
- Scan history — the products you scan, their health scores, safety ratings, and ingredient flags, stored securely in your account
- App usage data — events such as label scanned, paywall viewed, and subscription started, sent to Firebase Analytics for product improvement
- Device information — device type, operating system version, and app version for crash reporting
- Crash logs — anonymous error reports via Firebase Crashlytics to help us fix bugs
2.3 Information Sent to Third-Party AI Services
When you use the scan feature, the food label photo you capture or select is sent to OpenAI’s API for ingredient analysis. Before this happens, the App asks for your explicit consent. The following applies to this data:
- Only the food label photo is sent — never your name, email, or account details
- We do not store your photos on our servers
- Photos are processed by OpenAI and discarded per their data retention policy
- You are asked for consent before the first scan and may withdraw consent at any time by contacting us
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information collected to:
- Analyse food product labels and identify ingredients using AI
- Personalise scan results based on your allergy and dietary profile
- Store your scan history so you can review past results
- Sync and back up your data across devices when you create an account
- Improve the accuracy and performance of the App
- Respond to your support requests
- Comply with our legal obligations
4. Data Storage and Security
- Your scan history, allergy profile, and account data are stored securely in Google Firebase Firestore, protected by Firebase’s industry-standard security infrastructure
- All data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections
- We implement access controls so only your authenticated session can read or write your data
- We do not sell your personal data to any third party, ever
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only with the following service providers, strictly to operate the App:

6. Food Label Photos and AI Processing
When you scan a food product label, your photo is:
- Converted to a compressed format on your device
- Sent directly to OpenAI’s API for ingredient and nutrition analysis
- Not stored on our servers
- Processed and discarded by OpenAI in accordance with their data retention policy
The App requests your explicit consent before sending any photo to OpenAI. You may decline consent — the App will function normally but AI scanning will not be available without it.
We do not build a database of your food label photos and we do not use your photos for any purpose other than the single scan you initiate.
7. AI-Generated Results Disclaimer
Ingredient analysis, health scores, and safety ratings generated by the App are produced by an AI model (OpenAI GPT-4o) and are for informational purposes only. Results may not be accurate for all products, labels, or ingredient formulations.
This App is not a substitute for professional medical or dietary advice. For severe allergies or medical conditions, always read food labels manually and consult a qualified healthcare provider before making decisions based on AI-generated analysis.
8. Children’s Privacy
The App is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@stewardtechnologies.com and we will delete it promptly.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
- Correction — update inaccurate data
- Deletion — request deletion of your account and all associated data. You can also delete your account directly in the App under Settings → Account → Delete Account
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format
- Withdraw AI consent — withdraw your consent to share food label photos with OpenAI at any time
- Opt-out — disable analytics and advertising tracking in your device settings

10. Account Deletion
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data directly within the App:
Settings → Account → Delete Account
Upon confirmation, the following is deleted immediately:
- All scan history
- Your allergy and dietary profile
- Your account and settings
- Your Firebase Auth account
This is a complete, immediate deletion. No email or external step is required. Data is removed from our servers within 30 days of deletion.
11. Data Retention
- Active accounts — your data is retained as long as you use the App
- Inactive accounts — accounts with no activity for 24 months may be deleted
- Deleted accounts — upon deletion request or in-app deletion, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law
- Analytics data — anonymised, aggregated analytics data may be retained indefinitely as it cannot be linked back to you
12. Advertising and Tracking (iOS)
On iOS, the App requests App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission before enabling advertising attribution. If you decline, the App functions fully — we simply cannot attribute which ad led to your install. Your choice has no effect on the App’s features or scan results.
13. Push Notifications
The App does not currently send push notifications. If this changes in a future update, this policy will be updated and you will be asked for permission before any notifications are sent.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this document. For significant changes, we will notify you within the App. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
